Inside the Room: An Intimate Album Listening Session at The Cutting Room Studios
I pulled up to The Cutting Room Studios in SOHO nice and early. For intimate sessions like this, I always like to see the space before it fills up. It gives me time to read the room, understand the light, and decide how I want the story to feel.
This wasn’t a big industry showcase. It was private. About ten people. Close friends, collaborators, trusted ears. The kind of room where reactions matter.
Lighting Without Killing the Mood
I kept my setup simple.
Two speedlites placed high in opposite corners.
One resting on top of a mounted speaker.
The other set carefully on top of a lighting fixture.
No stands in the way. No modifiers. No clutter.
Power was kept as low as possible. I didn’t want to flatten the space or overpower the ambient glow of the studio. The goal wasn’t to light the room. It was just to gently lift faces out of the shadows while keeping that warm, moody studio atmosphere intact.
When you’re in a space like that, less is more.
Candid All Night
I made it a point to stay unobtrusive. No directing. No interrupting moments. Just observing.
This was a listening session. That means quiet head nods. Closed eyes. Subtle smiles. The artist watching the room instead of performing for it.
Those are the moments that matter.
With only about ten people in attendance, it felt personal. You could actually feel how the music was landing. The energy was calm but strong. Everyone was locked in and genuinely enjoying what they were hearing.
Very 4/20 Friendly Energy
Let’s just say the room was extremely 4/20 friendly. The vibe was relaxed. Very relaxed. I may or may not have had to step out of the room a few times just to reset and grab some air.
But honestly, that added to the authenticity of the night. It wasn’t polished or performative. It was organic. Real people reacting to real music in a real studio.
A Successful Night
By the end of it, I knew I had what I came for.
Intimate moments. Genuine reactions. Strong storytelling frames without disrupting the flow of the session.
Overall, it was a successful job and I’m very pleased with the images I was able to capture. Nights like this remind me that not every event needs to be loud to be powerful. Sometimes the best stories happen in small rooms with good music and good energy.
