My First New York Comic Con: Cosplay, Creativity, and a Photographer’s Perspective

New York Comic Con celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2026, and this year was a special one for me. Not only was it my first time attending NYCC, but it was also my first time photographing the convention.

As a photographer, I was most excited about one thing: the cosplay.

I’ve photographed plenty of events over the years, but getting the opportunity to capture the creativity and talent of the cosplay community at one of the biggest conventions in the country was something I had been looking forward to. After finally experiencing it for myself, I can say it was well worth the wait.

Returning to the Javits Center for a Different Experience

Although this was my first New York Comic Con, the Javits Center itself was very familiar territory.

Growing up, I attended the New York Auto Show there, and more recently, I attended the B&H BILD Expo during its final editions. I've visited the venue plenty of times over the years, but seeing the entire Javits Center transformed into a hub for nerd culture was something special.

Everywhere you looked, people were celebrating their favorite characters, franchises, games, movies, anime, and comics. There was so much happening throughout the building that it really felt like there was something for everyone.

Before even getting into the convention, I had a cool little moment while waiting in the Will Call line. I happened to run into Young Guru, who couldn't have been nicer. He was welcoming, and it was cool seeing him ready to enjoy the convention just like everyone else.

It was a fun way to kick off the experience.

The Cosplay Community Was the Highlight

If I had to pick my absolute favorite part of New York Comic Con, it would have to be the cosplay community.

This is what I was most excited about going into the convention, and it didn't disappoint. Everyone was bringing their A-game. The costumes, the attention to detail, the creativity, and the effort that went into bringing these characters to life were incredible to see in person.

As a photographer, I couldn't help but appreciate the work that went into each cosplay. Some of these designs are seriously impressive, and seeing the people behind them proudly show off their creations made the experience even better.

It's also a big part of why I enjoy cosplay photography so much. Cosplayers put so much time and effort into their looks, and many come ready to pose and bring their characters to life in front of the camera. It creates a fun collaboration between the person being photographed and the photographer.

I had a great time walking around, meeting cosplayers, and capturing some of the amazing looks I came across throughout the convention.

But one of my favorite parts of the experience had nothing to do with taking photos.

I also got to walk around with my nephew, who was excited to recognize so many of the different characters. Seeing him spot familiar faces and get excited about everyone's creativity added another layer to the experience for me.

It was a reminder that conventions like this aren't just about the costumes or the merchandise. They're about sharing the things you love with other people. Whether you're a photographer looking to create something cool, a cosplayer showing off something you've worked hard on, or a fan excited to see your favorite characters come to life, there's a place for you.

For me, the cosplay community was easily the number one highlight of NYCC.

Three Convention Displays That Stood Out

Beyond the cosplay, there were some fantastic displays and creative booths throughout the Javits Center. A few in particular caught my attention.

The Marvel Sentinel Head

One of my favorite displays was at the Marvel booth, featuring a massive Sentinel head.

As a Marvel fan, seeing something like that in person was awesome. The Sentinels are such an iconic part of X-Men history, and the scale of the display made it a memorable sight. It was one of those things that immediately caught your attention as you walked through the convention.

One Piece and the World of Elbaf

The One Piece display was another highlight. I especially enjoyed seeing the characters Loki and Luffy featured alongside the Elbaf theme.

One Piece has such a huge world and a passionate fanbase, so it was cool seeing that universe represented at the convention. Displays like this help bring these stories beyond the screen and the page, giving fans something memorable to experience in person.

The X-Men Statues

The X-Men statues were another standout for me.

Seeing these characters represented in statue form was a treat, especially as someone who has always enjoyed Marvel. The display was a great example of the creativity and craftsmanship that made some of the convention booths worth stopping to appreciate.

Between the Marvel Sentinel head, the One Piece display, and the X-Men statues, there was plenty to enjoy even when I wasn't looking through my camera.

Was There Anything I Didn't Like?

Honestly, I don't have many negatives to report.

The biggest issue was the rain on Sunday. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't ideal, but it didn't take away from what was otherwise a great convention experience.

I also didn't do much shopping, but that was more of a personal decision than a complaint. Since I was taking the train home, I didn't want to spend the day carrying around a bunch of bags and merchandise.

I did pick up a couple of T-shirts, including one for Melody and one for myself, which was exactly what I wanted to bring home.

As far as prices go, I thought there were plenty of things that seemed reasonably affordable. Of course, original artwork and collectibles can get expensive, but that comes down to personal preference and what you're willing to spend on something you love.

For me, the experience itself was the main attraction. I was there to enjoy the convention, photograph some incredible cosplayers, and take in everything happening around me. I didn't feel like I needed to spend a lot of money to have a good time.

Looking Ahead to My Next Convention

My first New York Comic Con was a great experience, and I'm already looking forward to doing it again next year.

I'm especially glad I finally got to experience NYCC from a photographer's perspective. Getting out there, meeting cosplayers, seeing the displays, and capturing some of the creativity firsthand made it a memorable experience.

I'm also looking forward to my next convention, which will be a smaller con. It'll be interesting to see how that experience compares with NYCC and what kinds of photography opportunities it brings.

One thing is certain: the cosplay community has given me another reason to keep exploring new events and finding opportunities to create.

New York Comic Con was an incredible reminder of what happens when people come together to celebrate the things they're passionate about. For a photographer, that kind of creativity is hard to beat.

I'm glad I finally made it to NYCC, and I can't wait to see what next year's convention brings.
